The Sweet Scent of Summer: Gardenias, Bike Rides, and Laguna Love

By Arlo Agogo - a human storyteller
Some scents stay with you your whole life. For me, it has always been gardenias. Growing up, me mum kept several gardenia bushes around the house. She’d tuck a fresh bloom into my lunch bag before school, knowing how the creamy white petals and rich, sweet fragrance could turn an ordinary day into something special.
As I got older, the habit became mine. Every morning I’d pick a flower or two, slip them into my shirt pocket, and carry that gentle aroma with me all day. People would comment that I smelled nice, fresh, almost like sunshine and flowers mixed together. I’d just smile and shrug. It was simply part of who I was.
That simple ritual led me to one of the best chapters of my life.
It was a perfect afternoon in Laguna Beach. I was out on my usual bike ride along the coastal paths, the Pacific sparkling to my right and the hills rising on my left. I stopped at one of my favorite outlooks to catch the breeze and watch the waves.
A few minutes later, another cyclist pulled up beside me. She was local, with an easy confidence that seemed to match the laid-back energy of Laguna itself.
I didn’t realize it at first, but the wind was carrying my gardenia scent straight to her. She turned with a curious smile and said something about the beautiful fragrance in the air. That opened the door. We started talking—about the view, the ride, the simple joy of being out on two wheels with the ocean air in our lungs.
Her name was Delaney. We chatted easily, the kind of conversation that flows without effort. Before parting ways as the sun began its slow descent toward the horizon, we exchanged numbers. I rode home with a bigger smile than usual, the gardenias in my pocket seeming even more fragrant than before.
A few days later I called her. “Want to hang out on the beach this weekend?” I asked. She said yes immediately. A daytime beach date felt perfect—no pressure, just sand, sun, and good company.
When we met up, she asked me about that special scent she’d noticed the first day. She said that she could smell it again. Is that you Arlo?
I reached into my backpack and pulled out a small bag of fresh gardenia flowers I’d picked that morning. I told her the whole story: me mum’s bushes, the lunch-bag surprises, the daily ritual of carrying their beauty close to my heart.
I explained how the flowers sometimes ended up in the wash by accident, leaving a light trace of gardenia on everything I owned. It made me smile every time someone noticed.
I gave her a bag of Gardenia flowers I had pick that morning.
Delaney listened with genuine interest. By the end of that afternoon, she was hooked. She started carrying gardenias too. Sometimes she’d tuck them into her hair just above her ear, where they caught the light and released their perfume whenever she moved.
Other times she borrowed my technique, slipping a couple into a pocket or keeping them close. It wasn’t long before she carried the same lovely scent that had been part of my life for as long as I could remember.
There’s something deeply romantic about sharing a personal tradition like that. I was enthralled—here was this vibrant Laguna Beach girl who now smelled like the flower I had always loved.
Every time we met, that faint fragrance wrapped around us like a shared secret.
Our relationship bloomed the way gardenias do: steadily, sweetly, full of life. We spent the entire summer exploring Laguna on our bikes. We’d ride the coastal trails in the mornings, stopping at hidden coves and scenic points where the ocean seemed endless.
Afternoons were for the beach—spreading towels on the sand, swimming in the sparkling waves, and watching the world go by. Evenings brought sunsets that painted the sky in impossible colors, favorite local restaurants with fresh seafood and good music, and long conversations that stretched late into the night.
There’s a song that captures exactly how I felt that summer: “Gardenia” by The Elovaters featuring Stick Figure. The lyrics seemed written for moments like ours.
“So nice to meet ya…”
Those words played in my head every time I thought about that first afternoon at the outlook. Meeting Delaney felt effortless and meant-to-be, like the ocean breeze had conspired to bring us together. The chorus always made me smile:
“Smell like gardenia
Smell it on the pillow when she leaves
When I think about her get that feeling
Get it in the morning when I'm ready…”

Even though our connection was built on daytime adventures and sun-drenched bike rides rather than late nights, the sentiment rang true. Her presence lingered in the best way. After a day at the beach, I’d catch the faint scent of gardenia on a jacket or a backpack and feel that warm rush of happiness. It became part of our story—how this lifelong love of mine had drawn her in and how she had embraced it so fully.
The song continues with lines that perfectly match the magic of that Laguna summer:
“What is hotter than the sunshine?
You know we always gonna be having a good time…”

That was us. Whether we were cruising the bike paths, floating in the waves, or sitting together watching the sunset, everything felt brighter. Delaney brought an extra light to my days, and the shared gardenia scent became our signature.
Friends started noticing it too. They’d say we both carried this beautiful, fresh aroma that reminded them of blooming gardens by the sea. We’d just laugh and exchange knowing looks.
“See you standing in the moonlight
I feel like I've been waiting my whole life…”

Those words echoed in quieter moments—when we’d lock up our bikes after a long ride or walk along the shore as the sky turned deep blue. Meeting Delaney felt like finding something I hadn’t known I was missing.
My gardenia ritual had always brought me joy, but sharing it with her turned it into something deeper, more meaningful.
As the weeks turned into months, our bond grew stronger. She wasn’t just adopting my habit; she was making it her own. Watching her pick flowers in the morning and tuck them into her hair became one of my favorite simple pleasures.
The scent surrounded us during picnics, bike rides, and beach days. It wove itself into the fabric of our summer in Laguna Beach—the waves, the sun, the laughter, and the constant gentle perfume of gardenias.
Looking back, it’s amazing how something as small as a flower could spark such a beautiful connection. What started as a chance meeting between two cyclists at a scenic overlook became a full summer of joy, discovery, and shared rituals. Delaney didn’t just like the smell of gardenias—she understood why they mattered to me and embraced them with an open heart.
That summer taught me that the best relationships often begin with the smallest, most personal things: a familiar scent on the breeze, a shared love of bike rides along the coast, and the willingness to let someone into your daily rituals.
Thanks to those gardenias, I met a girl who now carries the same lovely fragrance through her days, and our story continues to bloom.
