California's Best-Kept Secret

Alexander Valley is a hidden gem in California wine country. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where old farmhouses sit alongside bucolic vineyards that climb hillsides to mingle with groves of ancient oak.

Typicity and Expression

The Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet is a perfect expression of the region's character.

It seamlessly blends bright fruit with savory notes, and its graceful, flowing texture is a delight.

The wine's nose is filled with brushy aromas of sage and thyme, which overlay a core of red fruit flavors, including wild strawberry, raspberry, and just-picked plum.

Fresh acidity energizes the wine, giving it an elegant, medium body. The tannins are fine and tightly knit, providing deceptive intensity.

Vineyard Selection

The Alexander Valley benchlands are home to some of the most prized Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the world.

The soils here are a diverse mix of material from the weathering of the Mayacamas mountains and gravel and sandy loam deposited by the Russian River.

This combination of soils provides excellent drainage and a wealth of minerals, which are essential for growing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Silver Oak Alexander Valley vineyards are all located on the benchlands, between 200 and 250 feet in elevation.

This is the ideal elevation for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, as it is not too high that ripening becomes an issue, but it is also high enough to avoid the overly fertile valley floor.

Until 2011, Silver Oak Alexander Valley was always composed solely of Cabernet Sauvignon.

However, blending experiments taught us that small additions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc could add a touch of silk and spice that made the wine even more compelling.

These components are now permanent features of the Alexander Valley blend.

The Silver Oak Alexander Valley vineyards are a testament to the power of terroir.

The unique combination of soils, elevation, and climate in this region produces world-class Cabernet Sauvignon that is simply unmatched.

Silver Oak Wine

American Oak

Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in American oak barrels from our cooperage, The Oak.

The barrels are split evenly between new and used oak, which allows for ideal integration of both oxygen and subtle barrel characteristics without overwhelming the delicate flavors of Cabernet grown in the Alexander Valley.

The Alexander Valley is cooler than Napa Valley, so the grapes ripen more slowly, resulting in more savory aromas.

This is in contrast to the ripe, opulent notes characteristic of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 50-50 split of new and used oak barrels allows the Alexander Valley Cabernet to express its unique character.

The new oak barrels add vanilla, coconut, and spice notes, while the used oak barrels add complexity and depth.

The result is a wine that is both elegant and powerful, with a long, lingering finish.
